Product Notes

Hello! My name is Tyler Sherman, and I am composer and a bassist. From the time of my childhood, I have always felt a deep connection to music of many different sorts, and have devoted much of my life to the study and experience of this art. Whether it was Beethoven, Miles Davis, Earth Wind and Fire, or Bob Marley, the vibrations and tones never ceased to find their way to the purest part of me. I believe that this relationship is possible for all living beings, and I am thankful whenever I am blessed to point a fellow human to towards freedom and joy through this healing art. This project was orginially commissioned by New Vision Church in Bowie, MD for a holiday presentation with a string quartet. Being new to string arranging and orchestration, I thought it would be an exciting opportunity to try my hand in this style that was new and challenging to me. As I went to work on this short peice, my initial thoughts were 'I'll give it a try, have fun with it, and if it's terrible then oh well, it was worth the experience!' The other half of my thoughts said, 'Tyler, what in the world have you gotten yourself into?!' After a few weeks, I managed to come up with about nine and a half minutes worth of music, my first full string arrangment. Included in the piece were some traditional Christmas hymns and some original interludes that I composed. The performance seemed to go well, and I decided to meet with my string contractor, Juliettle Jones, to get a critique. After expecting to a get a nice long list of what didn't sound good, and what I needed to do better, her simple reply was, 'You need to record this.' I thought to myself how that would also be exciting, but how costs would prevent me from making it a reality.... Months came and went, and I continued on in the journey of life, with my best friend passing away in June, and myself even walking away from music for two months. As I was coming back into doing a little bit of playing again, I was working with a friend of mine, singer-songwriter Robert Miranda, on finishing his record, and he got to hear some of my string work. One evening as we were finishing, he expressed to me that he would love to fund the production and recording of my short Christmas suite, and to just tell him what I needed. I suppose the rest is history. While in Europe, I re-arranged the piece for a slightly larger ensemble (string sextet) and on return to the states, hopped on the bus one fall afternoon in September '13 to the Glass Wall Studio in Brooklyn, NY to record. This experience has been surreal, from the moment of the inception of the idea to walk into this unknown territory, to the conclusion of the final details of getting the music to CD Baby. The fellowship and shared experience with everyone that has worked with me and encouraged me in this process has been priceless, and I cannot even grasp the amount of gratitude I feel towards them. I felt that I have been able to dig within myself to find music that I didn't know existed, and have been able to learn to be open to the gift of inspiriation from the place that transcends the mind, that of the Divine. This suite has inspiration from some of my favorite composers, such as Maurice Ravel and Clare Fischer, but also was inspired by musicians I heard playing in the town squares in Prague, Czech Republic and Amberg, Germany. Some of these melodies I first heard sang by psalmists in African-American churchs accompanied by Hammond B3 organ, and some I first heard sang by monks in ancient cathedrals. At times, the Violins imbue the quality of a human voice, and at other times the Violas and Cello imitate the rhythmic pattern of a guitar or even traditional African drums. I sincerely hope that this recording will open up to the listener a perspective of this Christmas season which captures what I believe to be it's true essence. That is the essence of peace and the essence of hope. As we relflect on the year and look forward to the coming year, I pray that while listening to this music, we will experience the beauty of the present season, and the peace of the present moment. -TS.
