Product Notes

Dann Barnard was a student of twelve time Grammy Award winner and musical arranger extraordinaire, Clare Fischer. He is also a great admirer of the piano player, George Winston. His CD entitled, Deck the Halls with Dann Barnard, is a homage to the music of Christmas in a way that speaks to your heart and brings back the love of God that these songs were meant to inspire. Principally recorded in the winter of 2012, these spare and emotionally rich arrangements can be enjoyed by both young and old. There is a sort of childlike simplicity in the honest and almost spiritual approach he takes to his piano playing. There is a dichotomy to the sound as well; it has both a modern sound and feel due to the modal harmonies and modulations, but also a surprisingly nostalgic aura to it, as well. The arrangements are the result of ten years of working hard to try and fine tune each song to express what they were meant to express. The first track begins with, Deck the Halls, written with the melody moving in contrary motion. The motif develops into a four and a half minute improvisation of singular beauty. O Come all Ye Faithful, is played with such a pure spirit, it is almost like a prayer. Away in a Manger, begins as a whisper and adds layers and complexities as it moves along. The first verse of, Good King Wenceslas, is played in it's traditional form, suddenly exploding into a fantasy of improvisation based on a a triplet feel. Waltz of the Flowers is an almost five minute long mirror image of the original orchestral piece. And finally, the last track of the CD entitled, Winter is Over, Beautiful Spring, is an original composition dedicated to his wife, Harumi (Her Japanese name translated into English is, Beautiful Spring). Dann Barnard's hope in creating this CD is to honestly capture the essence of these Christmas classics. I believe that he has succeeded. Enjoy!
