Product Notes

My music has crossed boundaries from jazz to pop to modern classical, but I always strive for originality. I love programming my collection of synthesizers, and want a new piece of music every time I have a new sound. The themes of my lyrics go from serious looks at life to simple fun. There are some sounds and themes that run through an album, but no two songs are really alike. Some of the tracks would be hard to consider as songs, better called compositions. This album was planned to be as random as possible, reflecting what I might dream in a night, but a theme of love emerged, in lots of variations. Some of the variations are a bit on the PG-13 side, others over the top sentimental, hopefully all fun to hear. If you are browsing tracks, the tracks on Jungle Dreams are all very different, so I'll try to warn you! Sweet Dreams: instrumental, ethereal, dreamy. Drill, Baby, Drill: apologies to Sarah Palin for the phrase, go to the dentist and suffer, all in humor, with a latin beat. Tonight I'll Dream, 1st version: sung by me, a love song lullaby. Late Life Crisis: sentimental Irish-influenced love song to my children. Tonight I'll Dream, 2nd version: sung by Lisa Brumby, still a tender lullaby. Ex-orcism: love song to an ex-girlfriend, sung by me, dangerous territory but sincere! Drool, Baby, Drool: fun parody of Drill, Baby Drill, only Lisa sings about sexual attraction to the dentist. All in fun, but lyrics listed as explicit because you wouldn't want your 5 year old to learn to sing them. Tonight I'll Dream: parody of Tonight I'll Sleep, explicit lyrics because it's a love song to a sheep! Tonight I'll Snooze: mostly instrumental, a series of fantasies or dreams, culminating with an alarming ending. Review from Vin D'Onofrio, Decmber, 2013: In Jungle Dreams, David DeGrand has made a fun, interesting, and unusual CD. The songs and instrumental compositions are connected thematically in both approach and content and unified by the theme of dream. For the listener, it's as if we are audio witnesses to his mind's travels over one night's sleep. The overall impression is light and lighthearted but still musically adventurous and ambitious. Though occasionally there is a darker melody or lyric for contrast, those moments are only a small cloud passing through the blue skies of this collection of songs and compositions. David uses repetition and variation in different ways and to good effect on both the CD as a whole and on individual compositions. I can easily imagine this music also being presented as a theatrical show. Various elements combined throughout that are not standard practice in recorded music enhance the uniqueness of the CD. Keyboard synthesizer sounds and musical motifs are occasionally reminiscent of Renaissance and other styles of classical music while some sequenced percussion sounds and rhythms are Latin music based. The more humorous lyrics remind me of a Frank Zappa style quirkiness, and the songwriting on a few songs reminds me of show tunes. Sound effects such as cats meows, bells, plumbing noises, a woman talking, and dog vocals punctuate a few selections and make for theatrical storytelling. Repetition and variation come into play, in one way, as 'Tonight I'll Sleep', a pretty 3/4 waltz, and 'Drill Baby Drill' (re-messaged as 'Drool Baby Drool') have versions with both David and Lisa Brumby singing in different keys and with different arrangements. Once again, in a theatrical style, 'Tonight I'll Sleep' is reprised as 'Tonight I'll Dream' in a 15 second variation. David's singing voice is very personal and he often uses unusual song form and stylistic combinations in his songwriting. He obviously has lots of musical ability and uses it to compliment and further the songs and the overall musical picture rather than as a tool to impress in an overt style. His instincts for the length of the compositions and the CD as a whole are right on. For me, 'Tonight I'll Snooze', a nearly 20 minute long suite dream, is the most musically intriguing. I like this CD for it's content and execution and particularly for it's unique artistic vision. It's very refreshing to hear music that is created not for marketing but as a personal expression. ...and did I already say? It's fun!
