Product Notes

When Robert Johnson, Kansas Joe McCoy, or Little Hat Jones were performing acoustic blues it was about using song to tell a story. Those artists drew upon familiar traditions to speak to their audience about a commonality of experience. Trying to play the same or similar music today is like living under a hoodoo curse. Contemporary blues is primarily electric - interest in acoustic blues being limited. And when one encounters acoustic music it often gravitates around popish tunes that have little, if anything, to do with tradition. Or we find music with hyper-histrionic vocals and complex musical ideas played at warp speed - a blur of notes as performers try to outrace each other and run away from the melody. Into this chasm of musical extremes comes Jump Up Devil. Jump Up Devil celebrates a time when musicians sought to connect with people and tradition. The music on this album is about attitude and spirit. Like Son House and others said, the blues are a story, not meant to be played at a blur, but played with feeling. The blues aren't just notes, or riffs, or pyrotechnic playing or singing... they're emotion. When Jump Up Devil plays a song from the 1920s or 1930s about lost love, or trying to get back home, or when they write one of their own, they try to express the commonality of those feelings. Their blues is about remembering "song" first and foremost. As Robert Palmer wrote in Deep Blues: "The intimate link between worlds outside and inside our bodies [is something that the country blues] simply know." It's clear that Jump Up Devil knows that link. Listen to their music and see if you don't agree. The connection is there. Let it fill you!
