Product Notes

The Troublefakers and I worked so hard on this album we barely gigged for a year. Everything was poured into perfecting arrangements and fine-tuning mixes, putting live performances on the back burner. We are pretty psyched about I KNOW. The material and the process were learning adventures on a number of levels. 'Denial' and 'Mirror' directly address the topic of self-image in two very different ways. 'Denial' confronts our culture's obsession with celebrity and perfection, daring the listener to look inward to find self-worth, while 'Mirror' asks why the image in the photo always seems way off base compared to our own reflection. When I wrote 'Never Alone' I was in a place personally where I felt I could find no peace. Not even silence could be had. My only reprieve was hindsight and remembering what I had lost - not exactly a healthy direction to go, but it's where I went. How do you let someone in at a time like that? Very cautiously. Very, very cautiously. For most of this album I found myself wanting to tell a story - any story - in my lyrics. 'We Were Young' is one of those stories, a lover's tale interrupted by war and transformed by personal discovery. I tell my own transformation story in 'Birmingham,' and find out that it's true you can never go home again. In a way, 'Birmingham' and 'Broken Man' go hand-in-hand in lyric and in tone. It's not so secret here, but 'Neverland' is not listed on the album track list of the physical CD. Instead we included it as a as a bonus track. After reading The Child Thief by Seattle artist and author BROM, I was inspired to write this 6-minute epic devoted to the lure of Peter Pan and his Lost Boys. Fae Wiedenhoeft of SeaStar is featured on this track, adding an element of magic and fantasy to the mix. I may add a little tidbit later about 'Demon,' 'Not the Same,' 'Marry That Girl,' and 'Shut Up,' but for now I'll just leave these here for you to chew on.
