Product Notes

The themes in the songs on Mitchell Yards come from heartache, inner compasses, Northern heritage, transport, recession, unique places, lasting relationships, finding trouble and childhood reminiscing. They represent many years of songwriting. Winters are cold where I live and I like that it forces me to go inward to reflect. It is the time when most of these songs were written. Some of the songs evoke a forlorn, industrial aspect at times which seems to fit the region of the country where I grew up (Hibbing, Minnesota). The cover art on the album reflects that as well. It also hints at the willingness to take the abandoned and find some salvage. Old tires become beautiful art when mother nature sprinkles her snow on them. Sometimes songwriters can take an old idea, a forgotten place, or a dismissed belief and give it life again too. I make my attempts at that sentiment on Mitchell Yards. Many of the songs conjure up imagery of transportation. Railroads and buses played a large role in the community of my youth so they tend to creep into my songwriting. The tunes on this album are sprinkled with historical narratives coupled with honest, homespun stories. I like to challenge the listener to a lyric or story line they may not have encountered before (e.g. McCarthyism on the Iron Range from 'Science Fair' or a sailor's troubles in ' Kalaklan River'), yet pull you back into the song with a catchy refrain. The album was recorded in an idyllic studio in Northern Minnesota and mastered by a pro in California. The producer, Rich Mattson and the percussionist, Greg Tiburzi are both great songwriters and old friends of mine. Their tunesmith wisdom definitely helped shape this album. The album was mastered by John Golden (Chris Isaak, Trampled By Turtles). It is mostly guitar based music with prominent vocals harkening back to groups or songwriters I have loved through the years such as The Jayhawks, Replacements, Dylan, Neil Young, Wilco, Son Volt, Lucinda Williams, Pretenders, Ani DiFranco, REM and Greg Brown. Thanks for letting my art into your world!
