Product Notes

The first two well known big pieces for solo flute were composed by J.S Bach and later by his son C.Ph.E Bach. J.S. Bach's 'Partita' in A-minor BWV 1013' as well named as 'Solo for flute in A-minor' and his son's 'Sonata for flute in A-minor Wq 132' have both complex polyphonic harmonic, yet melodic structures, whereas C.Ph.E. Bach's Sonata is enhanced with a virtuoso elegance and sensitive expressiveness. Both compositions are not only written in the same key, as well as the composer's main interest was not the instruments capacity of tone qualities, but the engagement of many-voiced pieces into a single melody. Only 150 years later C. Debussy composed 'Syrinx' (or 'La Flûte de Pan', as he named this piece by himself) for flute in 1913. It was first performed by French Flutist Louis Fleury on 1 December 1913 at the Louis Mors theatre in Paris as the background music of Gabriel Mourey's three-act play 'Psyché'. J. Ibert composed his 'Pièce pour flûte seule' in 1936, which can be seen as a kind of offspring to Debussy's 'Syrinx' due to it's organic and improvising flow. One of the biggest collections of music for solo flute is probably the three-cycle series 'Les Chants de Nectaire' by Ch. Koechlin. Besides this music is unfortunately still rather unknown, it is probably one of the most complex works ever. In total this collection contains 96 pieces for solo flute and with interruption of July and August the same year, Koechlin started and finished his work between April and September 1944. The chosen 8 excerpts are from the first series, Opus 198.
