Product Notes

What are the Rumours From the Soul? They hint at matters that we suspect or have an intuitive sense about, but that are somehow hidden from clear view and cannot be easily defined. The rumours that Joe Sullivan is hearing from within involve the single-minded pursuit of an artist's individuality of expression, the harnessing of all of one's experience and creative energy to forge a musical statement of undeniable originality. The creative artist's journey leads him from a universe of limitless possibilities toward an inevitable need to define himself as a human being, an, as the rumours from the soul grow more insistent, to the painstaking process of bringing himself and his music into focus with the world. As you listen to the music captured on this disc, you will hear a series of compositions for a six-piece jazz ensemble which express a remarkable variety of thoughts and emotions, yet each tune is undeniably attributable to it's composer, Joe Sullivan. And you will hear Joe's trumpet playing, which is characterized by a beautifully dark, reflective legato sound and a harmonic approach that is richly complex and modern. Joe has surrounded himself with musicians whose playing stands up to the most demanding of professional standards, but for the purpose of this text I must save individual comment for my colleagues Jean Fréchette and André Leroux. Jean, aside from his noteworthy activities as a professional arranger, is the unheralded champion of the baritone sax in Canada. As for André, his dominant command of the tenor saxophone is eclipsed only by his intelligence and irreverent sense of humour. Listen to them trading on 'La Danse Des Maringouins', for instance and you'll hear two extremely competent cats do battle in the recording studio. What are the rumours about Joe Sullivan and his sextet? That this is one of the hippest, most swinging groups in the country today, and that sooner or later the Jazz Society At Large is going to find out about it. You, the listener who has just put this record on, already knows. Janis Steprans April 1997.
