Product Notes

This is the second recording by Imaginary Homeland, a project I began in 1997 as a home for compositions that draw on my deep love of the American jazz tradition, African percussion and fiddle music (especially from Ghana where I lived a few years in the 1990s), and other related sounds that have captured my ear and my heart. The song STRAIGHT FROM THE HORSE'S TAIL is inspired by Ghana's musical tradition of the "gonji", a fiddle whose bow and single string are both made of horse hair. TOGETHERNESS plays with different ways of feeling the same pulse within a band. For me, rhythm is about that tension of playing together and apart both at the same time. IDES PLUS TWO is rooted in Appalachian fiddle music, which I love for it's blending of European and African traditions. It was named after the date of it's intended performance (March 17), a concert which never happened due to a blizzard at New York's airports. KARIMBA TIME is a beautiful piece that Mark contributed. He wrote it first for solo karimba (a "thumb piano"), then arranged this version for the band. INTERLUDE TO THE AUCTIONING OF A GOAT pairs a West African xylophone with East African rhythmic counterpoint. The title was inspired by a story Mark wrote me about an unusual gig he played in Uganda. LULLABY FOR HENRY was written for my nephew Henry. I started out thinking it might lull him to sleep, but he was too feisty a fellow to let the music stay low-key. LITTLE STONE SONG is the only song here older than the band. We'd never recorded the Imaginary Homeland version, and I love how the strings pair with the sax and xylophone themes. CARRY ON is dedicated to a group of young fiddlers I saw play at a funeral in the village of Salnerigu, in northern Ghana. Their amazing musicianship left me proud to know they'd be carrying on their wonderful musical tradition in their own way. The cover art is from a painting by the wonderful artist Linda Ippolito, part of a series she painted while listening to our previous album, "Jump for George." It's so gratifying to see how someone else's creativity is inspired by your own. David Rogers.
