Product Notes

I am a Catholic priest from the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas. This is my 3rd full length album and my first in almost 6 years. Thus far in my musical career, I have done 'themed albums.' Instead of having an album of various songs that I have written in this point of my life, I try to have a particular theme around which to center an album. All of the songs on this album have to do with the person of Jesus Christ. I call it a 'who Jesus is to me at this point in my life' album. The album is more catechetical than it is sharing about my personal relationship with Jesus Christ. It is not a 'praise and worship' album, it is not really even a prayer album. My music tends to be more like a homily or a talk set to music. My music is meant to engage the mind about the truths of our faith in a way that perhaps we have not heard before. That is the kind of Christian music to which I generally want to listen. I want there to be some nugget or some turn of phrase of our faith that I haven't heard before. Then I can take that thought to prayer later. I like my Christian music to provide 'food for thought.' I also like it when Christian music takes passages of Scripture or other great texts of our Tradition and puts them to music as faithfully and accurately as possible. I generally do not like it when an artist tries to force a rhyme into an old text or inserts some sort of modern agenda into the ancient text. I prefer it when the text is just presented as it was with as little adjustment as possible. So on this album I have songs that are almost directly taken from their source material. 'The Name' is taken almost exactly from Philippians 2:6-11, 'One Man' takes phrases right out of Romans 5:12-31, and 'Master of Disguise' uses a lot of the material of Mother Teresa of Calcutta. Also on this album are basically talks and homilies that I have given that are set to music. 'It's All Good' is basic Christology that I have taught over and over, 'Divine Mercy' is a basically a song version of material that I have used several times in Easter homilies and 'Not My Will' is a reflection on Jesus entering into his Passion. I used a couple of 'cover songs' to cover the theme of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. 'What a Friend of Jesus' is one of my all time favorite hymns, and I think that I have provided a rather unique arrangement of that classic. 'Shepherd's Heart' was written by my sister-in-law, Wendy O'Connor, and I just love singing and playing it. I think that the album provides a fairly in-depth look at who Jesus is and each of the 11 songs provide a piece to understanding the person of Jesus Christ. The instrumentation is provided by myself and the very talented David C. Smith. It was a goal for me on this album to play more instruments. On my previous two albums, I just played a little bit of acoustic guitar on one track. On this album, I play piano, guitar, harmonica, and ukelele with an occasional background vocal here and there. David Smith does the lion share of the work, but I appear as an instrumentalist on most of the tracks. I have a couple of other guest vocalists on the album. Mark Fortino and Steve Courtney, both great recording artists in their own rights, lend their vocals to 'Pange Lingua', and Steve Courtney also sings on 'This is the Day.' David Smith's wife, Teresa sings on two tracks ('This is the Day' and 'The Name'), and their children make a guest appearance at the very end of 'Pange Lingua'. I am really pleased with the way that this album turned out, and hopefully you will enjoy it too. Thanks for reading. Peace.
