Product Notes

Alan Friend has been playing banjo, guitar, fiddle and concertina, and has been singing traditional songs from America and the British Isles for many years. He is a member of the New York City based old-time band 'The Triple A String Band' and was a founding member of the old-time bands "Steal the Donut" and 'The Chelsea String Band' as well as the traditional singing duo 'Buttermilk Channel.' He has played with the contra dance band 'The Contrapolitans.' Alan has performed both solo and with numerous groups at festivals such as the New Jersey Folk Festival, West Virginia's Pipestem Festival, the Park Slope Old-Time/ Bluegrass Jamboree, the New England Folk Festival (NEFFA), the Kings County Opry, the Eisteddfod-NY Festival of Traditional Music and the Brooklyn Folk Festival. He has also played at coffee houses and clubs from Montreal to Washington, D.C., and on local radio stations. He was a musician in the off-off Broadway musical Dark Hollow in 2012. Alan also gives banjo, traditional ballad and old-time string band workshops and has written a number of feature articles for the Banjo Newsletter. Alan's first CD, "Had a Dog," features songs and old-time tunes from the Southern Appalachian Mountains with guests on fiddle, guitar and harmony vocals. His new CD, "Bad Times & Better Times - Old-Time Tunes & Songs," is a collection of old-time tunes and songs on the theme of hard and better times, featuring Alan on banjo, guitar, fiddle & vocals, joined by superb musicians Harry Bolick on fiddle, mandolin & vocals, Don Friedman on guitar, banjo & vocals, Julia Friend on banjo & vocals and Charlie Shaw on bass & drum. It was inspired by an exciting, enthusiastically received concert they gave in 2013. Alan is an Executive Board member and past President of the Folk Music Society of New York, Inc., aka the New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club. He lives in Brooklyn, NY. WORKSHOPS Traditional Ballads: Alan presents traditional ballads from America and the British Isles. He accompanies some on banjo, guitar concertina or fiddle and sings others a cappella. Clawhammer Banjo: This hands-on old-time clawhammer banjo workshop for beginning and intermediate players starts with the basics and adds various techniques such as the hammer-on, pull-off, slide and drop-thumb. Tunes using these techniques are taught both by ear and with tablature. Old-Time Jam: Alan leads old-time jam sessions. The primary purpose of these 'ensemble' instrumental activities is to have fun. Participants are encouraged to actively listen to one another in order to create a great old-time band sound. Particular attention is paid to tempo and instrumental blend. Mostly standard tunes are played, starting at a slow tempo and playing up to speed as participants become comfortable with the tune. More advanced tunes are chosen for sessions with more experienced participants.
