Product Notes

'The Agency...' released their first album 'For the Brave and Troubled' on December 15 2012 to positive critical reviews with comparisons drawn with the likes Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Leonard Cohen and the Velvet Underground. The band, based in Newcastle upon Tyne England, have since released a single 'She/The Temple' which gained more critical acclaim, including being named as Single of the Month in Crack Magazine. 'Sad Parallel' will be the second single from their forthcoming album 'Of Ghosts'. The band was formed after Garry Cosgrove (drums) suggested that Steven K Driver (vocals/guitar) should write some songs. He turned to Steve Beyer (guitar), Andy Ludbrook (bass) and Kerry Ramsay (vocals) to complete the line up. However, others do contribute. Jason Blaney has played drums on tracks and at gigs, Gemma Thompson plays cello, Fraser Smith (Shed Seven and Little Man Tate) plays keyboard and piano on the second album, Scott Wall also appears on piano on both albums and DJ Fonzerelli (aka Aaron McClelland) has offered strings and remixes. As well as recording the band have played a number of gigs and festivals of the last year. Alongside their own headline shows, they have supported the likes of Allo Darlin' and played festivals such as Sunderland Soundscape and NARCFest 13. Whilst 'The Agency...'s' lyrics and structures pay homage to folk, the music veers from country to post-rock with all kinds of diversions along the way. The band cites influences as diverse as Dylan, Pink Floyd, the Felice Brothers, Mark Lanegan, the National, Wiliam Shatner, Leonard Cohen, Alice Cooper and the Wizard of Oz. With literary and media influences as diverse as the musical soundscape there is a little bit of something for all who listen to 'The Agency...'. The Story So Far... The release of "For the Brave and Troubled" and 'The Agency...'s' live shows in 2012 have already won the band local, national and international acclaim, courting generous and favourable reviews with the Crack Magazine describing the record as: "...rather fabulous. The Agency... are a Newcastle based band, trading, nominally in folk/rock, but such a label is a tad reductive in this case. They have the kind of listen-to-me intensity that Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds manage to conjure up...and the instrumentation is exemplary throughout. Incredibly rich, and with plenty of sweet melodies to boot, this is like setting down with your favourite bar of quality dark chocolate." Whilst AmericanaUK awarded a rating of 7/10 and included the track "She May Meet a Tall Dark Stranger" on their March 2012 compilation CD: "...it is a very enjoyable record...there's craft here, articulate and often humorous lyrics, great playing and superb execution and, in chief songwriter Steven K Driver, a chameleon like vocalist. The songs themselves are essentially folk songs, but filtered through post-rock, country and psychedelia and with "Carnivale" even a possible Grandaddy influence..." At the beginning of 2013 the positive reception continued with Adam Millard of Crackle Feedback awarding the album 8/10 and going on to say: "For The Brave And Troubled. The music is almost universally slow paced, considered and beautifully structured, the lyrics transpose fanciful imagery onto a bleak canvas of realism." She/The Temple was released on 29 April 2013 (watch the official video here) and was named single of the month in the Crack Magazine. There were also positive reviews in the likes of NARC Magazine and influential blogs such as Sound of Confusion. In March 2013, the band were asked to offer their thoughts for Crackle Feedback's Broken Record feature, which was a real honour for them. Off the back of all this, 'The Agency...' were one of the first groups to be named as HMV Newcastle's 'Band of the Week'. The Agency.. have recently recorded a session for Nick Roberts' BBC introducing show...
