Product Notes

The story of The Affections began in 1977 when Rob Smith and George Ellis first met at Fort St High School in Sydney and quickly discovered a mutual love of classic rock and evergreen pop. Greg Tolhurst and Rob Risio soon joined the ranks, and after several changes of name and direction, plus the addition of singer, Wayne Hammonds, The Affections were all set to make their mark on the musical world. After finishing a respectable 3rd in the 1980 NSW final of the Hoadley's "Battle of The Sounds", the group soon caught the eye of local promoters, managers, producers and record companies. The only problem was that the boys were all still high school. Undaunted, and in between classes and exams, they continued on their quest toward pop stardom, concentrating on building up a solid fan base by playing the thriving Sydney pub scene. With the help of The Harbour Agency, they also picked up tour supports with a number of established Australian acts such as Cold Chisel, The Angels, The Divinyls, Mental As Anything, The Church and The Radiators. Attracting continued interest from both independent and major labels, as soon as the boys finished school they signed to Deluxe Records (a new label formed by Michael Browning, former manager of Billy Thorpe and AC/DC, and later Noiseworks). Here they joined with label mates INXS, The Numbers, Heaven and The Dugites. Within a week of signing with Deluxe, however, disaster struck. Greg managed to injure himself in the line of duty and needed an extended break. His place was filled by the hard-hitting Brad Robinson. So, in early 1982, with Brad occupying the drum throne, The Affections released their first single ('This Is Love' b/w 'Little By Little') produced by friend and mentor, Jim Manzie (the creative force behind Ol '55 and later producer for The Choirboys, The Breakers, The Innocents). Throughout 1982, the band's popularity and fan-base grew (as well as their tougher edge), and further touring, recording and television appearances soon followed. But in early 1983, after a series of mishaps and disappointments, The Affections self-destructed without any further single/album releases and before realising their true potential as one of Australia's finest powerpop bands. But like the proverbial Phoenix rising from the ashes, in 2008, after temporarily reforming to play at their high-school reunion, The five original Affections decided that the time had finally come to record the album they'd never quite managed to make as teenagers. Out of 30 or so original songs, the 13 tracks on 'Prolonged Adolescence' were selected. With only minor modifications to lyrics (removing the most embarrassing of teenage expressions), they have attempted to recapture both the raw energy and shimmering vocal blend of what Jim Manzie once dubbed, 'The Haberfield Rock Sound'.
